Shape Sorter

Shape sorters are a toddler staple. They simultaneously challenge and entertain, while teaching about shapes, colours, spatial awareness and allowing a toddler to experience shape.

Shape sorters teach your toddler cause and effect -"If I push this shape through the hole, it disappears"

and object permanence - "Oh, it didn't disappear -- there it is again!".

Don't be alarmed if your toddler just pours out all the pieces at first  -- he/she may need a little help. Take the simpler shapes, like circles and squares, and show how they fit into their holes. i.e. have a little play yourself. You are your childs favourite playmate and ultimate teacher! At first, your little one will probably try jamming pieces in willy-nilly. Let her explore. When she gets frustrated or asks for help, step in and guide those little hands. Soon, your toddler will be sorting like a genius.
